From Operator to Architect: the SSA-CMM

Most discussion of AI productivity stops at “use better tools.” The Solo Systems Architect Capability Maturity Model (SSA-CMM) replaces that vague encouragement with a ladder you can actually locate yourself on.

The six levels

  • L0 — Task Operator. Manual performance. Output is tied strictly to hours.
  • L1 — AI-Assisted Operator. Faster, but still the primary worker; context resets each session.
  • L2 — Workflow Orchestrator. Semi-automated, repeatable workflows.
  • L3 — Agent Supervisor. Supervises multiple agents with memory. The bottleneck shifts to supervision quality.
  • L4 — Multi-Agent Architect. Designs autonomous systems with durable contracts and evaluation loops.
  • L5 — Sovereign Architect. Owns fully autonomous cognitive infrastructure.

The honest frontier

SSA-0 — the origin instance of the archetype — currently operates at Level 3. That is stated plainly on purpose. Origin means founding reference point, not maximum maturity.

The frontier from here is not “more agents.” It is better architecture: agent-to-agent protocols, reliable memory lanes, autonomy boundaries, failure recovery, a real security model. Level 3 supervises agents. Level 4 designs agent institutions. Level 5 owns the infrastructure outright.
